Pregnancy skincare tips

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Hormonal changes can cause skin discolouration, and sun exposure can make it worse.
  • To manage breakouts, consider using mild AHAs (such as lactic acid) or PHAs to exfoliate, but always with caution and make sure you consult a dermatologist.
  • Consider adding antioxidants to your routine!

Skincare during pregnancy: what should you avoid?

  • Vitamin A-derived ingredients: retinol, retinoic acid, retinaldehyde and retinyl palmitate.
  • Essential oils: They're generally not recommended during pregnancy due to possible allergic reactions or skin irritation. This is particularly true in the case of citrus essential oils. For the baby's safety, it's best to avoid them altogether or use them in very small doses.
  • Fragrances: Try to limit your exposure to perfumes and their allergens as much as possible. They carry similar risks to essential oils, particularly in terms of triggering adverse reactions, which can be more difficult to manage during pregnancy.
  • BHA/Salicylic acid and its derivatives: As a lipid-soluble acid, it has a greater ability to penetrate deeply into the skin. Although small amounts typically found in cosmetics (2% or less) are generally safe, it is advisable to be cautious.
  • Caffeine: Often found in eye creams products, it's usually listed in the INCI as Caffeine, Coffea Arabica or Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract. It's best to avoid these as they are stimulants that can potentially enter the bloodstream and reach the foetus.
